Living in Pacific Heights
Pacific Heights is the polished, leafy hilltop neighborhood where the city's wealth has lived since the 1880s. Grand Victorian and Edwardian flats, two of the best parks in SF, and a stretch of Fillmore Street that runs from cocktail bars to cashmere boutiques. It's quiet, residential, and rewards people who want their neighborhood to feel like a neighborhood — not a scene.

The vibe
Old-money quiet with a polished Fillmore Street spine. Mornings are dog walks, afternoons are tennis at Alta Plaza, evenings are a cocktail at Palmer's Tavern and a slow walk home past Victorians lit up like a movie set. The streets are flat-ish along the ridge and steep to the bay — and the payoff for the steep blocks is a view that runs from the bridge to Alcatraz.

Parks & outdoors
The neighborhood's quiet superpower. Lafayette Park (Gough & Sacramento) is the bigger, sunnier hilltop with manicured lawns and bay views; Alta Plaza (Jackson & Steiner) is the more formal terraced park four blocks west, with tennis courts and a great playground. Both are off-leash dog-friendly during morning hours. Downhill to the bay you're 10–15 minutes from Marina Green and Crissy Field.
Groceries & errands
- Mollie Stone's Grand Central — The Pac Heights staple at California & Steiner. 2435 California St
- Whole Foods Franklin — Compact urban store on the Lower Pac Heights edge. 1765 California St
- Trader Joe's Masonic — A short drive west into Laurel Heights. 3 Masonic Ave
Gyms & studios
- Orangetheory Lower Pac Heights — Heart-rate-zone HIIT on Fillmore. 1633 Fillmore St
- JCCSF Fitness Center — 45,000 sq ft, indoor lap pool. 3200 California St
- FITNESS SF Fillmore — Full-service member-owned. 1455 Fillmore St
Getting around
Much better than the Marina. The 1 California runs east-west along Sacramento Street straight into FiDi; the 22 Fillmore runs north-south down Fillmore to the Mission; the 3 Jackson and 24 Divisadero add coverage. No Muni Metro or BART in the neighborhood itself, but FiDi is 20 minutes by bus and Hayes Valley / BART are a quick rideshare. Hills are real — biking is for the strong.
Renting here
Stunning Edwardian and Victorian flats dominate, often 2–4 units in a converted single-family home with bay windows, fireplaces, and period millwork. Rents are some of the highest in the city, especially on the prime Broadway, Pacific, and Jackson blocks with views. Parking is rough outside of buildings that include a garage spot. Best with a group of 2–3 who want character, light, and a quiet block — and who don't need walking-distance nightlife.
Best for: quiet, beautiful streets, parks within four blocks, and a polished, grown-up version of SF.
